Blue Letters Archive

This page is dedicated to the Blue Letters Archive sculpture. An artwork by Chris Peterson in his hometown Zwolle.

This granite sculpture functions as a container, an archive, storing plastic letters directed at the future. The sculpture exists of a large portal and a smaller piece positioned in front of it. The sequence of holes on the polished surface, invite you to look inwards and catch a glimpse of the letters. It is not a matter of easy consumption, where you can just scroll through the archive unattentively. You need to look, perhaps see and make your way to the digital archive to actually find out what is written in detail. These messages, predominantly from young people, describe their views regarding a sound, healthy and responsible way to treat our environment. Which behavior is desirable to tackle urgent issues of the present and the future? What do we need to change not only in terms of production as well as demand, but also in terms of our thinking and related actions?

The letters are written on plastic, a material not necessarily perceived as good for the environment. In contrary, the material is often highlighted as a negative influence on nature. To turn the negative connotation of this material into something more positive, the plastic becomes a valuable carrier of a new future orientated narrative. Each ‘letter’ can take any shape and doesn’t have to be a flat sheet. It is whatever the writer finds a suitable shape to bring across his or her message.

By clicking on the profile picture of each writer, you are given an insight of the world of tomorrow. Each letter is documented and preserved online. The archive will expand over the years. Each year, one or more letters are added.

Note: the letters are written in Dutch.
